Sikaflex 221 is a high performance, multi-purpose, highly adhering, flexible, one component polyurethane sealant. Under the influence of moisture from the environment, it hardens into an elastomer. Suitable for making permanent elastic seals.

Sikaflex 221 is a suitable material for flexible, durable and highly adhering seals. Materials that can be effectively and permanently sealed and joined together in various configurations are: steel, aluminum, non-ferrous metals, wood, ceramic materials, glass, plastics.
Due to the possibility of cracking stresses in transparent and pigmented materials, the manufacturers' recommendations should be followed. Test with actual substrates and conditions to ensure adhesion and material compatibility.
Sikaflex 221 is generally resistant to fresh and sea water, diluted acids and alkalis; temporarily resistant to fuels, mineral oils, vegetable and animal fats; not resistant to organic acids, glycols, concentrated mineral acids and alkalis and solvents.
The surfaces must be clean, dry and free of grease, oil and dust.
Sikaflex 221 can be applied at temperatures between 5 °C and 40 °C but changes in reactivity and application properties should be considered. The optimum ambient and sealant temperature is between 15 °C and 25 °C.
Sikaflex 221 can be applied by hand, pneumatic or electric piston gun.
Smoothing and finishing
Smoothing must be done within the sealant skin time. It is recommended to use Sika Tooling Agent N for smoothing. Other smoothing agents must be tested for suitability and compatibility beforehand.
Uncured Sikaflex 221 can be removed from equipment and tools with Sika Remover 208 or other suitable solvent. After curing, the material can only be removed mechanically.
Hands and exposed skin should be washed immediately with wipes such as Sika Cleaner 350H or a suitable industrial hand cleaner and water. Do not use solvents on the skin!
Sikaflex 221 is best painted after a skin has formed. Coating adhesion can be improved by activating the joint surface with Sika Aktivator 100 or Sika Aktivator 205 prior to painting.
If the painting process requires baking (>80 °C), it is best to perform this process after the sealant has fully cured. All coatings must be verified by performing preliminary tests under production conditions.
The flexibility of paint coatings is usually lower than that of sealants. This can lead to cracks in the coating on the sealing surface.
